On January 15, 2014 in honor of the 85th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 1300 Community House Middle School students taught an awestruck online community a much needed lesson in dreaming!

From simple, clear promises to well thought-out pledges, student after
student shared how they would contribute to Dr. King's Dream of a better
future. We got a glimpse of how society's future citizens and civic
leaders #DREAMFORWARD.

And here's what I learned about our Dreamers.
They not only understand the challenges we face and tackle them
head-on, they understand their role today and the one they'll play
tomorrow in resolving them!

Our Dreamers were so unified in their #DREAMFORWARD message, it was difficult distinguishing race and ethnicity among them.

The scars left by our country's blemished history ARE fading, and this
gives me hope someday we will live in a society capable of
self-correction.

I'm convinced our greatest chance of fulfilling
Dr. King's dream of equality and true freedom, rests within the genuine
intentions of young people to not repeat the mistakes of the past, stand
for what is right and vest in treating ALL people fairly with respect.

Thanks to Congressman John Lewis for providing our Dreamers their charge forward! Who better than you can speak to the sacrifice and reward of being willing to stand for justice? You epitomize civic leadership and we were thrilled to have you dreaming with us!:)

Thanks
to our Dream Team coordinators, Principal Brooks, Katy Coffelt and CH
teachers for your support in making this event happen! You folks ROCK!:)

And to our Community House Dreamers you outdid yourselves! Thanks to your vision, we'll be tagging the #DREAMFORWARD Tumblr with dreams for MANY days to come!:)

NEVER stop dreaming. BE A KING!

Luckie

P.S. I'd be remiss. Our Dream Team has more than earned its dream...

It
is our dream, as an administrative team, that public schools will stop
participating in the type of labeling, sorting, and selecting that is so
characteristic of our society as a whole. It is our dream that all
students will have equity in education, where every student gets what he
or she needs, regardless of background. It is our dream that every
student will be taught at the highest possible levels and a rigorous
academic course of instruction is available to all students. And it is
our dream that doors will open for all students as a result of having
received the best possible education our schools can offer. #DREAMFORWARD

“Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr., stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial,
turning it into a modern-day pulpit. He saw an America where men and
women of all colors would be loved equally as God’s children. He invited
us to not be satisfied until ‘justice rolls down like waters and
righteousness like a mighty stream.’ We have come a long way in these
fifty years, but we are not there yet. We need to find ways to share our
common humanity, instead of finding differences to divide us. I am
encouraged by #DREAMFORWARD’s
efforts to reaffirm Dr. King’s Dream for the future. I hope young
people are inspired by this observance to choose the way of peace, the
way of love, the way of nonviolence. Young people are the future, and
more than ever before, we need them to be unafraid to stand up for what
is right, to speak up and speak out, to get in the way and to cause some
good trouble in the name of a better America. We must dare to carry the
dream of a world that is more fair and more just. If we do those
things, if we keep the faith and keep our eyes on the prize, we can
advance Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Dream in 2014 and beyond.”
On Wednesday January 15th, 2014 the world will pause in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 85th birthday.

As a Nation, we will never forget Dr. King's life and civic legacy.

As a person of color, whose southern-born Grandparents vested in the hope of the Civil Rights Movement, I can never detach from King's Dream.

A multi-hued, non-violent army [that included my Ancestors] marched, rode, stood, sat, walked and suffered for a shared Dream. Dr. King gave his life fighting for the People's Dream.

As beneficiaries of The Movement, we're often viewed as the fulfillment of King's Dream. But I ask, are we really?

Are we the fruit of the Civil Rights Movement if we've dismissed its most fundamental principle – service to community? In 2014, are we living or merely reciting Dr. King's Dream?

What are we doing to help others?

On January 15th 2010, historian Sandra TALIAFERRO penned her favorite blog post, A Friend Of Friends: Lessons From The Underground Railroad.

Sandra's Roots The Gift narrative is one of hope for descendants on either side of a blemished history to rise and work collectively beyond it.

AFoF sparked in all of us. It was a catalyst leading to racially-mixed discussions on the research responsibility of slavery's descendants, black and white.

AFoF prompted me to create the Carnival of African American Genealogy and host its 1st Edition Restore My Name – Slave Records & Genealogy Research, a cross-cultural, sharing of slave-related records. And with CoAAG's success, we went further to keep the exchange flowing with the launch of A Friend of Friends, a repository of slave documents researchers could contribute to and access online.

We knew oft times overlooked and/or dismissed historic documents, are the key to our research-challenged Slave Ancestry. We hoped our efforts would make a lasting difference.

King a world changer. Sandra a culture changer. Both Dreamers in a society capable of self-correcting its flaws.

Be true keepers of King's Dream and Sandra's hope, today. Accept the truth, we must change the world from where we stand. The work is OURS.

On January 15th for the 6th Edition Carnival of African American Genealogy, we'll pledge dreams for the future via our #DREAMFORWARD Tumblr. Dreams big and small we’ll marry with ACTION in the days and years ahead.

Sandra friends will carry her community hope forward by reblogging her A Friend Of Friends: Lessons From The Underground Railroad wish and continuing the work of fostering a research community where Ancestors of all descendants are acknowledged and respected.

Please join us for BOTH!:)
My response was brief and what I believed honest -- "they don't really appreciate it much until I'm not doing it". How wrong I was!

REBIRTH: It's Time For Revival was not only SOUL FORTIFYING for this Mama-missing, Buddhist gal, it was Spirit Therapy for my children and family too!:)
The kids, who've missed the kinship I grew up with, have been surrounded by it in the weeks leading up to REBIRTH! They've heard me singing the Gospel, learned about our family church homes and spiritual customs, and witnessed me reaching for His Eye Is On The Sparrow and Precious Lord time after time, claiming the refuge they have always offered me.

The response to Journeying By Faith from Uncle Jake's namesake, cousin Ronnie Jr., moved me beyond words!

They speak, or in this case, sing for themselves.

Jesus Loves Me and Precious Lord are among the songs of my childhood that ring most clear. I've NEVER heard the words, "Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand..." sung sweeter than by our beloved, Mahalia JACKSON (1911-1972).

Tomorrow among the many Ancestors being remembered and honored, we'll bless REBIRTH, the 5th Edition of CoAAG with "Georgia Tom" DORSEY, my cousin and composer of Precious Lord.

Today, we give thanks for Sister Mahalia...
I love this picture of my Great-Grandmother, Annie CARTER JACKSON {1898 – 1981} with her Daughters, my Great Aunt Minnie (still living) and my Grandmother, Fannie Louella aka Anbownes {1920 – 1992}.

I adore the Church Sister hats, and Aunt Minnie’s diva pose (that’s so her!:-). They are standing in Winton Terrace, the housing projects where my Grandma lived and where I have many a sweet memory from. Grandma was my babysitter until I began Kindergarten!:-)

What’s the occasion? I have no clue. Easter Sunday? Church service at Allen Temple AME? Eastern Star gathering?

Each of these JACKSON SHEros holds a special place in my heart and I miss them more than a dozen Wordy Wednesdays can capture.

No matter where our spiritual journey carries us through life, there are few who don't remember with deep reverence the fundamental role The Church held in our community and family when growing up.
There was time when The Church was THE cornerstone of our community. The Church was our anchor.
For many of our Ancestors their 1865 emancipation was their rebirth. For others it was Baptism and the acceptance of a Christ-filled life. And still for others it was a special hymn or select scripture that awakened their soul.

I think of the sweet, carefree days when my Uncle Jake (Ronald JACKSON Sr.) preached his sermons from the pulpit of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. The movie stars LeVar Burton and Louis Gossett, Jr., in their roles as Kunta Kinte and Fiddler from the television series Roots. In this movie, Kunta and Fiddler accompany their owner to another plantation at Christmas time for a party, and become involved in a plan to help some runaway slaves escape via the Underground Railroad to freedom. A simple, yet powerful story. There are many messages and lessons to be learned from Roots: The Gift.

In one of my favorite scenes, Fiddler and Kunta are helping the group of runaway slaves get to the river where they are to meet a boat that will take them further on their journey to freedom. Along the way they make a stop to pick up other “passengers” on the Underground Railroad. When they come to a farmhouse, Kunta approaches and knocks. The man asks…”who goes”? Kunta responds “Friend of Friends”…in acknowledgment, the man replies “Friend of Friends”. A group of “passengers” exit the house. Kunta, Fiddler, and the group continue their journey.

This year, I was particularly moved by the Underground Railroad scene, and even more so by the phrase uttered by Kunta- Friend of Friends. The phrase, and variations of it, was used along the Underground Railroad as a password or signal to those assisting runaway slaves on their journey North…to freedom. The traditional response to the “who goes there” password is said to have been “A Friend of a Friend”.

A Friend of Friends. Say it… A Friend of Friends, again…A Friend of Friends. It evokes such a comforting, welcoming feeling. A feeling of trust, of sharing, of caring, of kindness, and of friendship, however brief. At the same time, it is transient…adjusting and changing with the circumstances. I’m A Friend of Friends….you don’t know me, but I require assistance…I need your help, and guidance…some information to aid me on my journey…then I’ll be moving on…to the next stop along the way.

The phrase, and the underlying concept, seems particularly appropriate and relevant for those of us in the genealogy community; aren’t we all on some level really just A Friend of Friends? Strangers helping strangers. Friends of friends with a common bond that ties us all together….the desire to know our ancestors, and to tell their stories. A common goal, with different methods, different paths that cross and intersect along the journey. As we travel this road to uncovering our ancestors and their stories we should all embrace the concept…we should be A Friend of Friends. Don’t be afraid or reluctant to share, to care, to guide, or to assist your fellow researcher along their journey.

As an African American researcher my task is two-fold; I research my family, but inevitably I must also research the family of my ancestor’s slave holders if I want to know more about my roots. Often we must seek information (assistance) from those that we do not know to aid us on our journey. It is an unavoidable truth – the descendants of our ancestor’s slave holding families may hold the key to our enslaved ancestor’s past. Slavery is an ugly truth of our shared history. I am not angry with you because your ancestor held my ancestor as a slave; don’t be angry with me because I seek those records that may shed more light on the lives of my people, and help me to tell their story more completely. Some who were members of slave holding families assisted passengers along the Underground Railroad. I challenge you to be A Friend of Friends.

We, as researchers of our African American ancestry, must also remember to share, to care, to guide, and to assist our fellow researchers; reach out, take time….no, make time. Can you request and expect the assistance of others, yet not expect the same of yourself? I urge you to stop being selfish with your research. Don’t miss out on a connection or a long lost cousin because of fear or uncertainty. Post It, Blog It, Share It, and Publish It. Many who were passengers along the Underground Railroad returned to assist others on their journey to freedom. I challenge you to be A Friend of Friends.

True genealogists know all of this, and understand the necessity of it. Indeed, the concept is nothing new in the genealogy community. Random, and not so random, acts of kindness occur every day. So, consider this a wake-up call, my challenge to you. When a fellow researcher comes calling…for info…for guidance…for knowledge…for support – be there – to share, to care, to guide, and to assist.

I’m Sandra Taliaferro and I am extremely excited to act as the host for this very special CoAAG. We asked you, the genea-community, to share memories and stories of your grandmothers, and your response was overwhelming.

This 2nd Edition of the CoAAG features 20 submissions with memories and stories that will make you laugh and maybe cry, but will surely pull at your emotions and warm your hearts. There are stories of strength and love, and memories of good old down home cooking. These women were indeed the foundations of their families; this trait is clearly expressed in the posts you'll read. The treasured images speak to their beauty and grace. It’s all about grandmothers; we give tribute and we honor them.
